i believe Event

City Year’s evening party at its annual convention was held at the historical Howard Theatre in D.C. which opened in 1910. After a long history of hosting ground-breaking musicians, it had been dormant for decades until its revival in 2012.

I wanted to capture its vitality and history in the look and feel for the evening. Inspired by the role of church in the music and the iconic architecture of the theater combined with the powerful statement of belief City Year places in the youth we work with, I came up with the concept of “i believe” and an angular saturated pattern to celebrate this inspirational theme. We crowd-sourced belief statements from the corps members to inspire participants to fill out their own belief statements. The cards they wrote, in the shape of open envelopes, would then get placed in special boxes that created a unique mountainscape of colorful triangles.
